Overview
The Hearing Science Laboratory is a centre of excellence for research at the All Institute of Speech & Hearing. The Hearing Science Centre, which initiated its operations in January 2024, aims to deepen the understanding of auditory perception in individuals with normal hearing and hearing impairment. Utilizing an array of methodologies including behavioral approaches, electrophysiology, and assistive technology, our research centre endeavors to tackle the complex challenges associated with auditory perception in humans.
Faculty members and researchers at the centre are dedicated to both basic and applied research. The centre’s mission is to advance theoretical knowledge while also addressing the practical needs of individuals with hearing impairments. The research endeavors focus on:
- Exploring Hearing Mechanisms: The centre is dedicated to understanding the complex processes involved in human hearing. Through the study of the auditory system at different levels, insights are gained into how sound is perceived, processed, and understood by the brain.
- Understanding the perceptual consequences of hearing impairment: The centre aims to identify the specific causes of hearing deficits in individuals with impairments. Also, to comprehend the perceptual consequences and physiological and psychophysical mechanisms underlying hearing impairment. This knowledge helps in developing personalized interventions and rehabilitation plans.
- Developing Innovative Solutions: Using advanced technology and assistive devices, the centre aims to create new ways to enhance communication for those with hearing impairments. This includes designing improved algorithms for hearing aids and cochlear implants.
- Training Professionals: Through education and mentorship, the centre provides opportunities for undergraduate, and postgraduate students and PhD scholars to gain hands-on research experience. The goal is to equip them with the skills and knowledge to tackle the diverse challenges in the field of hearing science.
- Industrial collaboration: Fostering collaboration between academia and industry is paramount to our mission. Through partnerships with industry stakeholders, we aim to leverage their expertise and resources to accelerate the translation of our research findings into tangible applications and interventions. The centre also aims to provide scientific consultation and validation of products developed by industry partners. This ensures that high-quality products reach the community, meeting the needs of individuals with hearing impairments effectively.
